Calahonda is without doubt one on the fines developments along the Costa del Sol.
It was founded in 1963 and it has won several awards over the years, including an international award for the best Spanish urbanisation of the year 2000 - 2001, the Resident Tourism Award organised by Mijas Town Hall in 1986 and the Barclays Bank award for the best development on the Costa del Sol.

The original Calahonda was founded by the Van Dulken family and was formed by joining two real estates, each of 280 hectares.

Mr Juan Orbaneja developed the area further and created Cabopino after purchasing some of the land from the Van Dulken family. Juan Orbaneja also built La Naranja social club which helped to keep the community united and informed.

The initial planning and architecture of Calahonda was by Garcia de Castro and Gabriel Allende. Calahonda it is now the largest urbanisation between Marbella and Fuengirola which is the reason for recent attempts to separate Calahonda from Mijas. Unfortunately the attempts failed, which means that residents will have to keep on paying taxes to Mijas.

Situated between Marbella and Fuengirola, Calahonda has managed to create an exquisite environment in which to enjoy all the Costa del Sol has to offer. Puerto Banús, Southern Europe's premier boating and leisure centre, is only 15 minutes drive away and Málaga's large international airport can be reached within 25 minutes. Calahonda also has its own harbour, Puerto Cabopino, where you can practise any kind of nautical sport and enjoy its fine sandy beaches.

Calahonda extends gently from the coast almost 300 metres above sea level, offering fantastic views of the surrounding countryside and sea, with spectacular views to Gibraltar and Africa.

Calahonda enjoys a well-run community with excellent administrative services, and over 60 hectares of green zones that have been restocked with pine trees over the past 15 years.

Calahonda is the ideal place for long and short term residents. There are at its lowest number a minimum of 14,000 people residing in Calahonda and its highest up to 45,000.

There are serveral commercial centres to choose from including Centro Commercial Calahonda near Los Jarales campsite, El Zoco and the new Los Olivos offering wide choice of supermarkets, shops, banks, flowers, health shops etc. The urbanisation boasts an excellent golf course which makes it very attractive to golf lovers. There are a multitude of restaurants, bars and cafés as well as supermarkets and all the major banks, Dentists, Medical centres, English International school, church and a language centre.
